Onion-potato group:

This group is controversial, it differs from that of shallots by its much better storage capacity and from an organoleptic point of view, by its onion aroma and greater pungency.

But there are of course intermediate accessions between these two groups.

AggPO#7: ‘Norwegian onions and potatoes’

Origin: Scandinavian countries.

Accession status: Grex population / Selection population.

Type of accession: Multi-individual population.

Accession history:

In December 2020, Philippe Heinemeyer, a Frenchman, obtained 25 onion-potato accessions from the NordGen seed bank in Norway.

They mainly consisted of potato onion accessions from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, but also from other European countries.

The same year, Philippe Heinemeyer sent a sample of two seeds from each accession to Kelly Winterton.

On his blog, Kelly Winterton describes his excitement, his astonishment, then his disappointment regarding these genetics which he describes as morphologically distinct from shallots and onions-potatoes conventionally cultivated in Western countries.

These ‘Norwegian potato onions’ produce many small bulbs unlike Western types which only produce a few large bulbs. Another essential difference is found in the emergence of the flower stalks, these are not emitted from the root plate, but emerge from the central meristem of the bulbs.

During their first year of growth, the 25 accessions produced only very small bulbs, barely 2.5 cm in size.

They were left in place during the winter of 2021/2022. One of the 25 accessions failed to overwinter.

The remaining 24 accessions flowered prolifically.

He selected around twenty individuals producing the largest bulbs, and brought them together to form a grex population which he named: “Norwegian Potato Onions”.

Accession acquired by Joran's Seeds and Research as seeds, from open pollination with the rest of Kelly Winterton's accessions, in 2023, from Kelly Winterton.

Shallots Group:

In the past, in English-speaking countries, the term “shallot” has been incorrectly used to characterize any type of perennial onion, including   Allium fistulosum.

This is perhaps why most known onion-potato accessions are of American origin.

The generalization of the terms: “scallions” ( A. fistulosum ) and “spring onions” ( A. cepa ) made it possible to give “shallot” its real meaning.

Unfortunately, these days the term “shallot” is under threat again.

Overused, it is used by seed groups to characterize hybrids between shallots ( A. cepa var. aggregatum ) and onions ( A. cepa var. cepa ). Even in France, where these hybrids were formerly called “รฉchaillons” (by compression of the words “shallots” and “onions”) they are now called shallots.

These hybrids ultimately only have their organoleptic qualities in common with the shallot   sensu stricto   since they generally produce only a single bulb composed of 1 to 3 cloves contained within the same tunic. And that they are therefore only propagated sexually.

Shallots   sensu stricto   produce an aggregate of bulbs. Can range from 3-4 to a dozen bulbs, often having several cloves within their tunic.

AggS#9: ‘Ed’s Red’

Origin: Nampa, State of Idaho, United States of America.

Accession status: Contemporary cultivar.

Type of accession: Stabilized population.

Accession history:

The American seed company Fedco Seeds has reintroduced a cultivar of red-skinned Dutch shallots "Ed's Red", this cultivar propagated sexually and asexually was initially very heterogeneous.

After selection work carried out by Beth Rasgorshek, a farmer from the town of Nampa, in the state of Idaho, this cultivar spread to several seed companies in the United States.

The seeds acquired by Joran's Seeds and Research in 2024 were produced by Brennan Henry Allsworth in Decorah, Iowa and were distributed by the American seed company Experimental Farm Network.

Description :

Its large bulbs have a very good storage capacity, up to a year.

They have a red tunic and white flesh with purple dermis.

Harvest in 105 days.

Probably resulting from a hybridization between shallots ( A. cepa var. aggregatum ) and onions ( A. cepa var. cepa ), the plants of this accession have up to around ten growing points, but few bulbs really dissociate (rarely more than three per plant). The bulbs are often composed of several cloves, contained in the same tunic.

This accession is very flourishing.

AggS#11-S2: ‘Scottish Syboe’ (SRL)

Origin: Scotland, United Kingdom.

Accession status: Regenerated old local cultivar.

Type of accession: Multi-individual population.

Accession history:

Syboe (also spelled “sybow”) is an old Scottish term pronounced “Sybees”, it was generically attributed to non-bulbous onions.

In this case, ‘Scottish Syboe’ is an accession acquired by Kelly Winterton, around 2010, from a Scottish man.

This accession develops in a compact tuft, which can have around forty growth points, and with flat and fistulous leaves, was known not to flower.

However, after several years of cultivation, Kelly Winterton achieved flowering and seed production.

Seeds from this line sexually regenerated by Kelly Winterton were acquired by Joran's Seeds and Research in 2024, from Kelly Winterton.

Other species of onions:

“Onions”   sensu lato   are included within the section   Cepa   of the subgenus   Allium.

It includes:   Allium altaicum  ,   A. asarense  ,   A. cepa  ,   A. farctum  ,   A. fistulosum  ,   A. galanthum  ,   A. praemixtum  ,   A. pskemense  ,   A. rhabdotum  ,   A. roylei   and   A. vavilovii.

All are cultivated:

  • Allium cepa  : which does not exist in nature.

  • Allium fistulosum  : resulting from the domestication of  Allium altaicum.

  • Allium oschaninii  : species with only one cultivar.

These species have very low sexual compatibilities between them, most often forming sterile hybrids.

Their genetic resources are rare, because these species, often found in high altitude mountainous environments, have distribution areas restricted to a few countries, generally inaccessible for geopolitical reasons.

Apart from the botanical variety   cepa   of  Allium cepa   (the biennial bulbous onion) all onions   sensu lato   are perennial plants.

They are plants very resistant to drought and cold.

Allium fistulosum  : Fistulous onion.

Allium fistulosum   is only known in the cultivated state, it comes from the domestication of the wild species   Allium altaicum   which is found in Siberia and Mongolia.

Its domestication probably took place in northwest China, where its cultivation dates back to at least 200 BC. It was introduced to Japan before 500 BC, and then spread broadcast in Southeast Asia and Europe.

It is a perennial plant, which, unlike   Allium cepa , does not have long-day dormancy.

It can adapt to a very wide range of climates: very cold tolerant, it can survive winter even in Siberia but it also tolerates hot and humid tropical conditions and is also very drought tolerant.

There are 3 main groups:

  • A European type, grown for its foliage, used as condiments.

Closer to its wild ancestor   Allium altaicum  .

  • The Asian type, cultivated for its pseudo-stems, used like spring onion ( A. cepa ) and leek ( A. ampeloprasum ).

  • The “giant” type, like the Korean “Dae-Pa”, plants reach dimensions similar to leeks of the   porrum  subspecies.

The plants till very little and are propagated sexually, like the subspecies   porrum   in leek. Appeared more recently than the previous two.

Interspecific hybrids:

Sexually fertile hybrids:

Wild onion species are very resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses, so they have long been investigated to transfer their resistance to cultivated onions.

However, their hybrids are very frequently sterile.

These fertile hybrids are often artificial, developed through polyploidization and embryo rescue techniques   in vitro.

AggS#3: ‘Innovator’

Origin: Netherlands.

Accession status: Contemporary commercial cultivar.

Type of accession: Stabilized population.

Accession history:

In the mid-1980s Bejo breeders crossed shallots ( A. cepa var. aggregatum ) with   Allium roylei , a species of Allium from the Himalayas and known for its resistance to downy mildew (HR:   Peronospora destructor ).

At the end of a 30-year development process, including several generations of crosses and backcrosses, the first seed shallot with high resistance to downy mildew (HR:   Peronospora destructor ), adapted to long shelf life was placed on the market.

Inventors: Timo Christiaan Petter and Lennaert Crispijn Aardse, from the Dutch company Bejo/De Groot en Slot.

Patent filed on November 22, 2022.

Nominated for the winner of the SIVAL Innovation 2022 competition.

Accession acquired by Joran's Seeds and Research in seed form, in 2024.

Description :

Part of the group of “echaillons” (compression of the words “shallots” and “onions”), they generally produce only one bulb composed of 1 to 3 cloves contained within the same tunic.

Resistance to downy mildew is an important characteristic of the cultivar ‘Innovator’, but it also has other advantages for the grower:

Innovator has the same vigor and storability as the standard cultivar 'Conservator': the bulb can be very firm for up to 5 months after harvest.

At 8 months, 'Innovator' has a larger bulb size and a more vigorous root system than those of the standard, 'Conservator'.

Its bulb weighs about 70 grams, and measures about 6-7 cm high and about 3 to 5 cm at the widest point (the middle). They are elliptical in longitudinal section, with a strongly tapered root end.

The color of the flesh is: RHS 196D in the center, and RHS 70B towards the scales.

The color of the dried skin (3 months after harvest) is: RHS 176C. It has strong post-harvest adhesion and medium thickness when dried.

The variety 'Innovator' can be reproduced sexually and asexually, however its bulbs have a low tendency to divide.

0.25g of seeds (~250 seeds) for €5

Allium cepa   x   A. fistulosum , their fertile hybrids: Scallionions

Recent interspecific hybrids, a few cultivars are in circulation, and are called “Scallion” by seed groups and traders. I will call them “Scallion” (from the compression of the terms “Scallion” (attributed to   A. fistulosum )   and “Onion”.

Allium fistulosum   is a genetic resource of great interest for cultivated onions ( Allium cepa ), whether for its resistance to abiotic or biotic stress: resistance to pink roots ( Pyrenochaeta terrestris ), leaf blight caused by   Stemphylium vesicarium   (SLB), among others.

However, it remained unexploitable for a long time since their offspring ( Allium x proliferum ) is sterile.

The first hybridization attempts to obtain fertile hybrids date back to the 1950s, but it was not until the 2000s that the techniques were truly mastered.

These fertile hybrids come from F1 hybrid seeds which have been excised, and whose embryos have undergone polyploidization followed by rescue by   in vitro culture.

Since 2020, several cultivars are now available, some of them mass-market, aimed at amateur gardeners and small farmers, but the majority are developed by large seed groups aimed at large farmers.

These lines are difficult to discover and are sold in batches ranging from 50g to 1kg of seeds.

This collection of 10 lines is the largest offered on the internet, it represents a very important research work, and a large financial investment made by Joran's Seeds and Research in 2023.

Backcrosses with their parental species result in hybrids with highly variable genotypes, which can lead to fertility or sterility.

AXF-OP: Joran's Scallionions Grex

Origin: France.

Accession status: Grex population / Selection population.

Type of accession: Highly heterogeneous population.

Accession history:

This grex population is developed by Joran's Seeds and Research.

It is made up of 10 hybrid lines   Allium cepa   x   A. fistulosum , sexually fertile and cultivated simultaneously, in great promiscuity, in spring 2024.

The ten cultivars making up this composite population are:

  • Velocity: Developed by Starke Ayres, a South African seed company.

  • Marksman F1: Developed by Tozer Seeds, a UK seed company.

  • Guardsman F1: Developed by Tozer Seeds, a UK seed company.

Guardsman would be a hybrid   Allium cepa   cv. White Lisbon x A. fistulosum Japanese type.

  • Matrix (formerly Hi 08 527): Winner of a Royal Horticultural Society Garden Award of Merit for reliability and good performance.

  • Maradona: Developed by Argenta seeds, a Dutch seed company.

This cultivar is described as follows by its breeders: “For the coldest areas of Mediterranean countries. Maradona has the best combination of cold tolerance and very attractive upright leaves. Maradona is by far the fastest growing strain on the market."

  • Bunching Star: No information.

  • Neymar: Developed by Argenta seeds, a Dutch seed company.

  • Suarez: Developed by Argenta seeds, a Dutch seed company.

  • Win Star: Developed by Argenta seeds, a Dutch seed company.

  • Racer: Developed by Argenta seeds, a Dutch seed company.

Description :

This grex population, what I call “Scallionions”, is the first available.

It is designed for use as a breeding population, and as a pollen donor population for internal use at Joran's Seeds and Research.

This population is desired to be as varied as possible from a genotypic point of view in order to allow fertile hybrids to be obtained following backcrosses with accessions of   A. cepa var. aggregatum.

Sterile hybrids:

Interspecific onion hybrids are very frequently sterile, some have been preserved and are used in human food, particularly in family vegetable gardens.

These are most often ancestral accessions, propagated vegetatively and appreciated for their durability and ease of cultivation; they allow harvests almost all year round: harvesting their foliage during the winter and harvesting their bulbs during their summer dormancy.

They include:   Allium cepa var. perutile  Allium xcornutum  Allium xproliferum , or the cultivar 'Grisor' ( Allium oschaninii   x   A. cepa var. aggregatum    ).

_______________________

Allium cepa var. perutile :

This taxon seems reserved for a single accession, known under the names:

  • “Virgin Vive of Saint James”, in French.

  • “Eternal onions”:

    • in English: “Everlasting Onions”.

    • in German: “Ewige Zwiebel”.

It is probably an interspecific hybrid of onions.

However, no scientific literature is available on it. This accession, although ancestral and widespread, seems to have aroused no interest among the scientific community.

Perfectly sterile, this accession does not flower.

It does not go dormant in summer, which contributes to its name “everlasting onion” as well as its interest as a vegetable and aromatic plant.

Its relatively thin and fistulous leaves have concave D-shaped sections.

Allium X cornutum  :

These triploid and sterile hybrids, described by Clementi ex Visiani in 1842, have been subject to numerous suppositions as to their parentage.

In 2014, a Croatian study provided evidence of their tri-parentage, resulting from the hybridization of  Allium cepa  A. pskemense   and   A. roylei.

Three local and ancestral cultivars are known to it:

  • ‘Sint-Jansui’ (AXC#1), from the province of Utrech, Netherlands.

  • ‘Ljutika’, from the historic region of Dalmatia, Croatia.

  • ‘Pran’, in the Indian part of Kashmir.

Allium X proliferum  :

Sterile hybrids resulting from crosses   A. cepa   x   A. fistulosum  . These two species have flowering periods which are generally not simultaneous, however numerous individuals are recorded throughout the world and are used for human food, particularly for their ease of cultivation, whether in self-producing vegetable gardens. , or agro-ecological production systems.

These sterile individuals, multiplied only vegetatively, can be propagated by division of tufts, or by the bulbils present in their inflorescences.

These hybrids have in common that they are perennial and have bulbous inflorescences.

But their appearance varies depending on their parental lines: some accessions will grow in clumps similar to   Allium fistulosum , while others will have pronounced bulbs and divide in a manner similar to shallots ( Allium cepa var . aggregatum  ).

Their foliage is generally cylindrical-conical like that of   A. fistulosum , but can also be similar to that of  Allium cepa , with an adaxial flattening (D-shaped section).

Depending on the parental line of  Allium cepa    from which they come, the tunics of their bulbs can be white, yellow or red:
